What is packaging?
In Marketing, the packaging is the presentation of a product. It isn’t the same as “other” packagings, for example, putting the belongings of a flat in a box (when you’re moving).
In the case of marketing, the term it’s more oriented towards making an impression on the customer, and it can be associated (this will be a goal, in fact) with brand image. When we talk about packaging, we can refer to the packaging of the shipment itself, as well as the packaging of the product.
Shipping packaging
In the case of ecommerce, obviously, as the goods are sent by mail, how the packaging is presented as a whole is important. So throughout this article we’re going to talk mainly about this.
Taking into account that the cardboard boxes you use for your shipments must meet certain requirements, it’s worth trying to customize them in some way. In addition to fulfilling their main function: that your online store shipments arrive safe and sound.
Product packaging
If you sell your own products in your ecommerce, this is an option you should pay attention to. It’s not only about the cardboard boxes you use to pack and deliver your products, but also about the fact that when they open the pack, they’ll find a packaging that will make them talk.
Surely when you’ve bought a mobile phone, you’ve noticed how they’re presented; the more expensive they are, the more stylish and elegant their boxes are. The care of the product packaging is a trend that is spreading more and more every day, but it’s still not given the importance it deserves. And it’s a very good marketing element!
In any case, we’re not going to delve into the different types of packaging that exist, because each business knows its own and each product has specific packaging needs.
But we’re going to focus on the packaging of ecommerce products, and as you will see, we’re going to generalize the use of cardboard boxes as the main element to pack any merchandise.
Cardboard boxes, one of the keys to packaging
In addition to being stackable and allowing carriers to make better use of space, cardboard boxes are light and sturdy, so they can be used to ship almost any material. However, not just any box will do, and we can’t put the goods in it in just any way.
So here are 5 basic tips on how to pack correctly using cardboard boxes.
Choose quality packaging
In the case of cardboard boxes, it must be rigid cardboard with the flaps intact, as damaged boxes lose 30% to 60% of their effectiveness. If you also customize the packaging with your logo and corporate colors, more points for you.
You can also use an exclusive design to make your package stand out from the rest. Sometimes it’s more a question of imagination than budget. Simply changing the colour of the cardboard or writing a handwritten message can be enough. Read more in this post.
Size matters
In addition to quality, it’s important to choose cardboard boxes of the right size for the goods we’re going to send. Because if they’re too big, they can end up squashed and give a bad image when they reach the customer. And if they’re too small, if they’re too full, whatever is inside can break, which is also not a good idea.
How to pack a box?
This is an important point, especially when sending several products in a single box, because they can break when they collide with each other. It’s therefore important to pay attention not only to the wrapping, but also to the filling of your cardboard box or packaging.
For a correct packaging of several objects together, we must consider the following:
- Wrap each object with bubble wrap or some other cushioning material.
- Fill the gaps left in the box, so that the products don’t move.
- Put the most fragile objects in the centre.
- If we’re going to send sharp objects, we must protect edges and tips properly.
Seal the cardboard boxes correctly
In addition to protecting the contents, it’s important to seal the container correctly. This is done by sealing the boxes with packing tape. You should choose a quality tape that is strong enough for the weight of the goods.
Label the goods properly on the packaging
Finally, we’d like to remind you of the importance of labelling the goods correctly, with the origin and destination data clearly legible on the packaging. By doing this, you’ll avoid mistakes in the delivery, reshipments and in general, wasted time.
Here are some extra guidelines:
- If the cardboard boxes have been used in another previous shipment, you must remove or cancel any labels or previous data, to avoid confusion. (In case of returns, for example).
- In the case of international shipments, it’s mandatory to use the specific shipping labels of the company, to avoid returns or shipping errors. But in national shipments it isn’t necessary to use a specific label, so we can be creative and work a nice design that is distinctive of our corporate identity, as we mentioned before.
- To prevent our shipments from getting lost, it’s important to stick the labels well. We recommend sticking two copies on the outside of the box and another on the inside, just in case.
Conclusion
The packaging of your shipments is important, both for the products of your online store to reach your customers correctly, and to make a good impression and give that image of quality and vanguard that will help you create a good name for yourself.
In other words, you’re going to feed two birds with one scone. Well, the point is that we hope these tips have helped you, and that you’ve learned how to pack correctly.
